Moldova torn between Europe’s call and Moscow’s veto

Moscow has stopped importing wine from Moldova, saying it found impurities. But some believe the embargo is a retaliation for the partnership agreement with the European Union.

We went to the vineyards of Purcari, which date back to 1827, to understand what repercussions the block on sales to Russia is having on Moldovan wine producers.
We visited the Moldovan laboratories where the product has passed the controls and where experts rule out defects.
In Chisinau, the capital, we met Dacian Ciolos, European Commissioner for Agriculture, and Moldovan Agriculture Minister Vasile Bumacov.
At the border with Romania we spoke to workers who are building the connection to the Western European gas pipeline, so that Moldova no longer depends solely on Russia for gas supplies.
Public opinion remains divided: 44 percent look to the West, 40 percent to the East. Elections are approaching and 2014 will be a crucial year for Moldova.
